CUPCAKES! :oD
A 2 hour morning at Starbucks reading and writing. Ah!
I’m a Batman girl, through and through. I love for the good guys to win. However, I can’t lie - I’ve got a special place in my heart for a few villains. I just can’t help it. For example, I love Dexter. It’s actually hard to think of him as a bad guy. I love Scarecrow from Batman. The Joker. Deadpool, the anti-Spiderman. Sometimes, I just love the bad guy. To quote Franz Ferdinand, “What’s wrong with a little destruction?”

Going to offer it as a print in my store if it spits out nicely from the printer. Still waiting on new ink to arrive before I can re-open http://www.sherrisink.com

Well, hello again. Today I am thinking about the periodic table of elements. I LOVE the periodic table of elements. It is a fascinating work of collection and organization. It’s actually pretty brilliant in its organization (thank you Dmitri Mendeleev). This past summer I read a book called “The Disappearing Spoon” by a fantastic Science writer/blogger/columnist named Sam Kean which documents stories, tales, and the histories behind the building of the periodic table (and discovery of the elements within). It was such an interesting read.
My favorite chapter was on the uses of the elements in chemical warfare. For example, an interesting tidbit concerns the first use of chemical warfare being traced back to none other than (cue Gerard Butler’s Leonidas) the Spartans of Ancient Greece who used “the most advanced chemical technology of the time” against the inhabitants of Athens in 400BC—smoke. According to my good friend Sam Kean, the Spartans snuck up to the walls of Athens with bundles of wood, pitch, and sulfur. They lit the whole of the items and waited for the citizens to flee.
The unfortunate part is that this ancient Greek stink bomb didn’t have the effect the Spartans wished for (insert Leonidas’ “THIS IS SPARTA” kick instead), but how badass and innovative were those Spartans!? I think it’s awesome.
That’s just ONE story. WW2 has one of the BEST and most ironic I’ve read…so next time I will write about it. I don’t want to overkill on the Science talk.
I like Science.
